Beware of the Boogie Man…

I love social media! I love meeting new people around the world through Twitter, in particular, and talking with them, learning new things, learning about their cultures and about their part of the world. I love the exchange and I love the interaction with the different people.

With the world and all its time zones, Twitter has no time zones, it’s all here and now. Also the world doesn’t seem such a big place with Twitter, or with the other social media sites that are out there on the www’s.

My Facebook is my “inner sanctum”, that’s reserved for the  people who I call my family and my friends. There are people I’ve met through Twitter who I have Friended on FB, as I’ve gotten to know them because I consider them to be friends and so they become a part of my “FB Family”.

On the other side of the coin, one of the things I dislike about social media are the people who hide behind a computer keyboard, or a phone, who don’t have a profile picture that shows their face, they’re the ones who use a nickname, and not their own name and by doing this, they feel that by being “anonymous”, they can say hateful and hurtful things to, or about, another person. The only thing those people are, are cowards. Period. Try doing the same with your face in the profile picture and using your own name, you wouldn’t do it.

The other thing I dislike is the fact that there are those who use social media to gain the friendship, trust, of another person, and eventually arrange to meet that person but only for a more sinister purpose. Too many people have met their death, or have been raped at the hands of someone they’ve met online. Someone who isn’t what they said they were, someone who shouldn’t have been trusted in the first place.

I do have my own “safeguards” in place. With my Facebook, I only Friend people I know. With Twitter, I’m good with the “block” button. Weirdos will be blocked in a flash.

I’m happy to say I’ve met more good people than bad online. I’ve made good, long lasting, forever friendships and I’ve learnt many things about the people I’ve met and their parts of the world. The good certainly outweighs the bad.

But when online… beware of the Boogie Man because even though they’re not hiding under the bed or in the wardrobe, they’ll be found out there in cyberspace.

Until next time…
